The Terminal-Layer primarily contains the IFD-Interface (see [BSI-TR03112], Part 6), which abstracts from specific card terminal technologies and interfaces and enables the communication with the smart card. For the layer above the Terminal-Layer it is not important whether the card is contacted via PC/SC, within a SICCT terminal or via a proprietary interface and whether it is contact-based or contact-less. The design of this interface, which has been standardized in [ISO24727] (part 4), has been derived from the Windows-based SCard interface or PC/SC respectively and extends this interface such that other more (e.g. SICCT) or less (e.g. CT-API, Open Mobile API, NFC) powerful terminal interface technologies can be used in a unique manner.
